With a voice like velvet and original lyrical talent; we didn’t think we could gush over Loyle Carner anymore than we already do. But, here we are.
Returning for the fourth year in a row, the artist’s cooking school, Chilli Con Carner, is hosting its foodie fundraiser at Hackney Church Brew Co. on Thursday 19th September 2019. Set up to teach children aged 14-16 with ADHD how to cook, Carner’s school focuses on cooking nutritious dishes kids actually want to eat. And they’re all served up at the fundraiser alongside drinks and music.
Being diagnosed with ADHD at age 8 himself, the cause is one close to Carner’s hungry heart. He discussed his experience in an interview with GQ: “At first I was kind of negative about it but I think it was actually a very positive thing to happen that young because it put everything into perspective. Before that, I was just someone who used to get into trouble for no reason”.
With his songs Ottolenghi and Carluccio, we already knew that cooking and food were big influences for Carner’s music, but they’ve also been big parts of his personal life. Shining a positive light onto his own diagnosis, Carner says he found comfort and calm in cooking with his mum growing up. And that’s exactly what Chilli Con Carner does for its students, helping young people channel their energy into something productive, educational and exciting.
Learning how to make everything from sushi to pizza to Eton Mess, we can’t wait to see what culinary goodies are cooked up at the event. Tickets are £20, with all money raised going towards funding next year’s Chilli Con Carner cooking school. You can expect BBQ food, drinks and music from Rebel Kleff, DJ Chux and DJ Javez. And an appearance from Loyle himself. Head here to get a ticket to the event.
