Don’t Look Back in Hanger

Famished and ready to kill anyone who gets between you and your food? There’s a name for that. Hangry. Some of you have boiled with ‘hanger’ and some even burst with hanger on occasion. Although of course no-one at tastecard would ever lose our reason over food.

Well, hangry is now an official part of the English language with its enshrinement in The Oxford English Dictionary. The OED defines hangry as “bad-tempered or irritable as a result of hunger”. Sounds simple doesn’t it? But as you push your colleague aside intent on getting to that last bar of chocolate or packet of crisps, let’s look at what makes us “bad-tempered” when we’re overdue a feed.

Here’s the Science Part of Hangry

The term hangry isn’t as modern as you might think. It dates from a medical journal in 1956. Is hangry just a made-up term though or is there some scientific rationale behind it?

Actually, it is a real thing. Scientific studies have found that when your blood sugar level drops you really struggle to keep control of your temperament. In addition, to respond to this decline in your blood glucose your body is flooded with adrenaline as a counter measure, making it even more difficult to regulate your reactions. Take it from this dining club, definitely don’t discuss anything important on a hangry stomach!

The easiest way to deal with ‘hanger’ is of course to eat something substantial before you reach a level of hunger rage. If only there was a dining club that offered amazing discount deals like 2 for 1 meals or 50% off food with thousands of restaurants ready to calm your hangry mood.
