Just you, fried chicken and a mirror. And it wasn’t as strange as it sounds, we promise.
Valentine’s Day is a day designed for the loved-up, the other-halves, the married and the secret admirers. It’s a day to tell everyone how much you love, appreciate and can’t live without someone, usually through an over-priced bunch of roses and soppy card. But tastecard wanted to flip the big V-Day on its head to focus on the most loveable person of all: you.
Designed for single, coupled-up and “it’s complicated” guests to head down, dine solo and practice a bit of self-love, the TWO4ONE by tastecard pop-up restaurant appeared for a two-day Valentine’s special.
Hosted in Hackney, London on 13th & 14th February 2020, tickets for TWO4ONE were sold at £20, with all proceeds going to Mary’s Meals, tastecard’s charity partner.
Diners were invited down to the event to soak up an evening of self-love, delicious food and good music, all whilst dining solo. Sitting opposite a mirror decked with feel-good quotes like “Best. Date. Ever.” and “Hey good lookin’.”, guests tucked into dishes from Absurd Bird. And getting slaw down your chin in front of mirror wasn’t as bizarre as it first sounds. One guest told us: “The food was so good that I wasn’t even bothered about seeing myself eat. I’ve never dined out on my own before, but it was nice to have some ‘me’ time.”
Once plates were licked clean, the mirror was removed to reveal a fellow solo-diner on the other side. They then had the option to go Dutch and split the bill two ways or for one diner to cover the full bill. With 50% off thanks to tastecard, of course.
Kings of food from the Deep-South, Absurd Bird served up a feast of deep-fried vegan and chicken goodness at the pop-up. For starters, there were chicken or vegan tenders to choose from. Sceptical about vegan tenders? One vegan guest sang their praises: “I couldn’t believe they were vegan so I sent them back. That’s the best vegan fried chicken I’ve had!”
Mains were just as delightful, including XL chicken wings, a fried chicken burger and vegan chicken burger all served with crispy fries. And for dessert, a big ol’ slice of peanut butter cheesecake. And yes, it was as heavenly as it sounds.
The idea of eating fried chicken in front of a mirror on Valentine’s Day brought sceptics with it, but TWO4ONE got the feel-good, light-hearted message across that tastecard wanted. Musician Big Tobz was just one of the guests that enjoyed the event: “It was something different but I liked it and the food was good.”
