What new films are out in the cinema this January?

Jojo Rabbit

Set in World War II, a lonely German boy, Jojo, comes across a Jewish girl hiding in his attic thanks to the help of his mother. With just an imaginary Adolf Hitler for a friend, Jojo finds friendship in the mystery Jewish girl, meaning he has to take his blind patriotism head on.

The Gentlemen

Directed by Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen tells the story of American expatriate, Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), who fell into wealth after building a marijuana empire in London. Deciding to cash out on the business, a whole lot of bribery, blackmail and tomfoolery unfold.

1917

Based on an authentic account recalled by Sam Mendes’ grandfather, 1917 is the latest World War I biopic to hit the big screen. Two young British privates are tasked with the dangerous task of delivering a message deep within enemy grounds to warn 1,600 men, including one of the boys’ brothers, about an approaching ambush.

Bombshell

Recalling the controversy that took place at one of the most powerful media empires, Bombshell tells the story of the Fox News scandal that shook the world. Accused of sexual harassment for years, CEO Roger Ailes’ true colours are unveiled by three women, played by Theron, Robbie and Kidman.

The Grudge

The fourth addition to The Grudge film series, this 2020 instalment is about a young mother who murders her whole family. When a detective (Andrea Riseborough) is sent to investigate the case, she soon discovers that a wrathful ghost inside the house is the problem, cursing anyone who enters with a violent death.
