Self-isolation has brought out the creative-in-the-kitchen side in a lot of us. We’re seeing banana breads and frothy coffees all over our social media, and we’ve got a few easy recipes up our sleeves that’ll come in handy too.
One dish we’re really missing is sushi. YO! is usually our go-to spot and for anyone else missing their sushi fix, we’ve got an easy 4 step sushi recipe you can do without a rolling mat. So don a tea towel, get your seaweed sheets and try your hand at making your own sushi. We’ve given it a go ourselves and great news, it’s a whole lot easier than it looks. Just follow our steps below, get rolling and hey presto! Delicious homemade sushi.
Easy sushi roll recipe.
Serves: 1 nori sheet per person / Prep time: 5 minutes / Rolling time: 15 minutes
What you’ll need.
- Nori seaweed sheets
- Sushi rice (already prepared)
- Vegetables, e.g. avocado, cucumber, carrot
- Protein, e.g. chicken, prawns, salmon, tofu
- Rolling mat if you have one, but a clean tea towel will work if not
Step 1: The rice.
Pop a nori sheet, shiny-side down, on top of your rolling mat or your tea towel. Take a handful of rice and spread it evenly across the nori. Leave half an inch at the top and bottom of the sheet but fill to the sides.
Top tip: Dampen your hands to prevent sticking
Step 2: The filling.
Add your protein and vegetable ingredients lengthways. We suggest one protein and vegetable to avoid an over-stuffed roll.
Step 3: Roll it.
Slowly start rolling your sushi. Pull the mat or tea towel away from you to avoid it getting caught in your roll and make sure you keep the pressure for a compact roll.
Top tip: Wet the uncovered edges for better sticking
Step 4: Slice it.
Cut your sushi up however bitesize or chunky you like it. Make sure you wet your knife first and in between every cut for a smooth slice.
And bon appétit. Quick, easy, homemade sushi that’s good enough to give YO! a run for their money.
